Riviera students visit The New Times, share writing tips

Last week, students of Riviera High School visited The New Times with the intention of understanding how a media house operates, and how one can develop good writing skills. The session, that lasted over three hours, was facilitated by a number of editors and reporters. Anne Kemirembe Daniella Uwase Anne Kemirembe One thing I had never really understood was how newspapers make their profits but the editor has explained to us the different avenues through which they generate income. I believe many more students should start writing because it’s fun. Lisa Alfa Munyana I am inspired by people who write about the plight and empowerment of women. From the talk, I have learnt that stories can be got from anywhere since they can be drawn from our experiences and society. I want to develop my writing skills and choose an area to specialise in Rachel Mukashema Brendah Tesire Rachel Mukashema I am inspired by the fact that it is possible to write good articles even when you are not a journalist by training. I an now confident that we have all it takes to produce a quality school magazine that we are producing soon. Brendah Tesire I love writing because it is one way of expressing myself. From my interaction with The New Times editorial staff, I have learnt how to generate content and put an article together. I can also explain the role of a reporter and an editor. Roseline Umutoni Fredrick Twahirwa Roseline Umutoni I have picked several ideas from our visit to The New Times that I will implement in the school clubs where I am a member. I have learnt that before a paper is produced, it goes through various stages. I advise The New Times management to ensure that the newspaper is in all school libraries. Fredrick Twahirwa I enjoy satire and poetry. Basing on our discussion with the editors of The New Times, I have discovered that writing a very good article requires hard work and constant reading. I want to develop my writing skills by reading The Education Times more often. Samila Uwase Dorah Mfurayacu Samila Uwase My visit has made me appreciate writing the more. I have come to understand the power of writing and the impact it can have on lives. I think The New Times team needs to visit schools more regulary and talk to them about the value of writing. This visit has taught me to develop ambitions for doing everything that I desire. Dorah Mfurayacu I am passionate about writing because I know it takes you places. I encourage more students to start writing for newspapers regardless of what they intend to study in future. Afterall, wherever you go, writing will always be part of you.
