Police urge students to take part in crime prevention

The youth should be involved in strategies to prevent crime. The message was delivered by Police during a meeting with over 400 students of GS Nyinawajambo Secondary School, in Rwamagana District, yesterday. “As young people, use your energy positively to prevent crime in your area,” the District Community Liaison Officer of Rwamagana, AIP Goreti Uwimana, said. “Be the ears and eyes of your society and cooperate with Police by providing timely information to help prevent crime.” The Director of Studies at GS Nyinawajambo, Claude Uwizeye , commended Police for reaching out to the youth through training and sensitisation campaigns. “Respectable young people are those who lead by example. Always cooperate with authorities to help solve society’s challenges,” he said. Olivier Twagirimana, a Senior One student at GS Nyinawajambo, pledged to work closely with fellow youth to fight crime. “We have clubs at school through which we discuss how we can contribute toward national development,” he said. Rwanda National Police continuously reaches out to the youth and has trained over 600 members of the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Crime Prevention Organisation (RYVCPO) on crime prevention. The organisation comprises about 7, 000 members countrywide, including students, who support vulnerable communities by providing them with medical insurance, livestock and carrying out crime prevention awareness programmes in schools and communities, among others. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
