Ever heard about cancer? If yes, how should it be dealt with? Students of Kigali Parents Seconday School share with Open Voice their views, observations and experiences about cancer. Sam Baguma Lisa Alfa Munyana Sam Baguma I lost a family member to cancer. I will never forget the pain they went through. I encourage people to watch out for the common cancers such as cervical cancer and breast cancer. The earlier we find out our status the better. Lisa Alfa Munyana Cervical cancer and breast cancer are the only types of cancers I have heard about. My relative had breast cancer but was rushed to India for treatment. Fortunately she recovered properly. I think the solution is to go for cancer screening regularly. If detected early, it is possible to live for many more years. Beyonce Teta Gaelle Gahigi Beyonce Teta 13 I have heard about cancer before because my uncle succumbed to it. Although I am not sure what type of cancer it was, I know that it is painful and incurable. I was even surprised to hear that men also suffer from breast cancer. Gaelle Gahigi I have heard about cancer. Even a relative of mine died of cancer some time back. It is important to test for cancers such as cervical, prostate and breast cancer because they can be treated if detected in time. Bonita Bethia David Munezero Bonita Bethia I know cancer. I’m told brain cancer can make people lose their senses and has no cure. However, cervical cancer can be treated if detected early. That is why women are usually encouraged to go for check up every year. David Munezero 13 If there was a cancer screening opportunity, I would go if I am eligible. Cancer is very dangerous and needs to be detected early to be managed well. Although it is not a guarantee that one can recover from cancer, early treatment can at least prolong one’s lifespan. Josyln Manzi Kevin Kayitare Josyln Manzi I know nothing about cancer but if I got an opportunity to test for it, I would welcome it. Most people in our society rarely go for check up and as a result die from simple diseases such as malaria sometimes. That is why it is good to consult doctors regularly regardless of whether you feel okay or not. Kevin Kayitare 13, I first got to know about breast cancer from television but did not understand it so I asked my mother to explain. She was a bit reluctant but eventually told me everything about it. I actually think cancer is the biggest threat to our existence.
