I would like to contribute towards the current debate on what should be done in conserving our environment. When one talks of protecting the environment, this entails so many areas ranging from hygiene in society to natural resources like water bodies and forests. The hard biting poverty, high levels of illiteracy can all be attributed to improper environment management. This happens because when women have to travel long distances to fetch water, they can never get time to think of engaging in income generating activities like setting up low income enterprises. This also applies to children who when they walk long distances in search of water, they may never get time to attend school. Water management can only be realised if we all, regardless of our status, own this struggle by contributing in one way or another towards its solutions. For instance, construction of boreholes or installing high powered generators to bring water nearer to the people will reduce on these problems. Secondly, when we all appreciate the fact that cutting trees can lead to dangerous natural outcomes for our country, we shall have learnt how to protect our environment. Kimironko
