The curtain and carpets all roll down tonight as a beauty queen is crowned. The pageant grand finale starts at 6pm at Kigali Serena Hotel, where the 15 finalists will sashay their lithe bodies, exude the picture-perfect confidence, the smiles and finally prove that they have both the beauty and brains. Event organisers said tickets go on sale at 2pm and will only be available at the venue. Tickets cost Rwf15,000 for singles, and Rwf25,000 for a couple. The organisers have also kept the voting lines open into the catwalk proper, and people can send SMS with the word ‘miss’ and the number of their favourite contestant to 5000 across all mobile networks. The voting will remain open until the selection of five finalists. The contestants, who returned from boot camp midweek, are expected to strut and preen in their evening gowns, as well as traditional attire (imishanana), but it is the question-and-answer session of the evening that will make or break a candidate’s back – if the pageant’s rule holds tonight. The pressure is high, as the 15 finalists will be asked an array of questions chosen at random by picking a number from the basket. This week, the 15 finalists visited the national museum, but not before a stopover at a fashion shop, where they picked out high-heels for the grand finale. Outside the shop, passersby fought to catch a glimpse of the beauties. The contestants later had a guided a tour of the museum. “I have been here a couple of times but this time, I found an elderly lady who taught me a lot and even refreshed my memory as I had forgotten some things,” said Joelle Giriwanyu Ruzindana, one of the contestants. The contestants were happy to learn more about their culture, which was the organiser’s main purpose for the visit. “These girls have to know their culture and remember that it still exists.
