The local volleyball fraternity is set for a gripping action this weekend as the Coca Cola championship hits a climax with the eighth and last phase in Kigali. With just five points separating table leaders Kigali Volleyball Club and reigning champions APR, the two clubs are in for a cracking finale. KVC’s championship hopes come back to life last weekend in Butare when they won phase seven. The win took KVC at the top of the table with 470 points after APR was scrapped of all the phase points after being found guilty of fielding an illegal player. According to the executive secretary of the national volleyball governing body (FRVB), APR fielded Charles Habonimana who is not officially registered with the federation. “They were penalized because they fielded an illegal player. This serves as a warning to all the other clubs who may try to do the same in future,” Kubwimana told Times Sport. The mood is not expected to be any different in the ladies’ category as table leaders National University of Rwanda (UNR) and APEDI Rwaza face off. The two clubs are separated by just ten points. Amahoro indoor stadium, Kigali Institute of Education and Kimisagara will jointly stage the phase’s preliminary action while the semi-finals and finals will be held at Amahoro indoor stadium courts on Sunday.
