Rwanda’s APR Volleyball Club and Rwanda Revenue Authority(RRA) Women Volleyball Club were crowned champions of the 2023 Nyerere International Volleyball tournament that concluded in Arusha, Tanzania, on Saturday. Organised by Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA), the tournament takes place annually in commemoration of the death of the country’s founding father Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. The 2023 edition attracted 14 men’s teams while the women's category had 10 participating teams. Rwanda had four representatives at the tournament. APR VC and Police VC competed in men’s category while APR WVC and RRA WVC took part in women’s fray. APR reached the men’s final after beating Tanzania Prisons Group 3-1 in the semifinals while Rukinzo joined the army side in the final after defeating Police VC 3-1. APR VC went on to win the trophy after beating Rukinzo VC 3-1 sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23) in the final. In women’s category, RRA WVC clinched the title after easing past APR WVC 3-0 in the final. RRA won the first set with 25-17 before taking the second with 25-18. They secured the victory after winning the third set with 25-17. In general, Rwandan teams put up impressive performances as three of them managed to reach the semifinals in both categories.
