HIS STYLE: Dread locks remind me of slavery, says Ngabirama

Reggae artiste and song writer, Chrispin Ngabirama loves doing charity work. He also uses reggae music to promote human values. He shared with Society Magazine’s Stephen Kalimba some fashion tips. What determines your fashion style? Chrispin Ngabirama Casual wear works for me most of the time because it requires less time to get dressed and is more flexible than formal wear. I also love wearing fitting cotton trousers and shirts. I dress according to the season. Which reggae artiste inspires your dress code? I don’t look so much at the clothes; I am more interested in understanding the message in their music. Do you like jewelry? Yes, African ornaments. I love locally made jewelry. Where do you get them from? I buy the jewelry at the shops in Rugunga near the field below Lycee De Kigali. Others I get as gifts because my friends know I like them. When did you last buy clothes from a street hawker? Back in the day! There was one guy who had a pair of shoes, I really liked. What is your preferred hair style? I like afro dreadlocks. For me, they are a reminder of the slavery that Africans suffered. What clothing item do you think men should avoid wearing? I cannot judge, societies differ! But I advise them to dress, according to the function they are attending. Anything else? If you’re a job hunter, the normal work attire of the company is corporate, so it’s okay to wear a suit.
