Dear editor, As the good book says, “So many people perish for the lack of knowledge.” In this regard, I want to put emphasis on diabetes awareness in Rwanda. Diabetes is a disease that can be either Type 1 or 2. Type 1 is usually inherited and can be regulated by insulin injections. In the case of Type 2, people suffer from it because of poor eating habits and lack of exercise. Excess consumption of glucose will eventually cause the pancreatic gland to tire in producing insulin. Type 2 affects any one, especially older people. Basic knowledge on diabetes can save so many people, the trouble of expenses that result from poor feeding and carelessness. Eating a balanced diet is very important in fighting this disease. Besides, scientists have proved that there is no need to consume sugar. The glucose consumed in the foods we eat is more than enough to meet the needs of the body. This means taking sugar is just a poor luxury that can easily cost your life. Kimihurura
