HCP changes name

The High Council of the Press has changed its legal name to the High Council of the Media (HCM), The New Times has learnt. The Director of Regulation Research and Media Development at the HCM, Eugene Ruhinguka, confirmed the development last Thursday at his offices in Nyarugenge District. Ruhinguka explained that the move of changing the name was approved in the official gazette on August 13 this year. He said that the change is to encompass other media houses that were not originally represented in the title. Initially, the HCP was addressing issues of other media houses such as radios and television that were not necessarily for print. “Press explains printery, to write news by the use of ink which is not the same as communication that people use to exchange views, where proximity is not needed and where one can use a telephone, telegram, television, radio and internet. Our mission is to regulate media since it is the combination of all,” said Ruhinguka. He also added that people can access songs, news, and peoples’ opinions through media on several channels, which the press was not explaining to the people very well. So, the change of the name now gives meaning to what it does at the moment. Ends
