Potato producers are seeking an increase in the number of potato seed multipliers to enhance yields and combat escalating food prices in the market. One of the key solutions proposed to address the challenge of limited access to improved seeds is the expansion of potato seed multipliers. Presently, the country faces inadequate potato production to meet the dietary needs of numerous households. This disparity underscores the inability of the existing number of multipliers to meet the demands of farmers. Karegeya emphasizes, The certification process for seeds is lengthy, and there is a pressing need to scale up the number of seed multipliers. Farmers should not have to wait indefinitely. We require more investors and comprehensive training. The limited number of producers has led to a scarcity of improved or certified seeds, resulting in high prices that many farmers cannot afford. Bernadette Nzamukosha, a resident of Musanze district, and several local small-scale farmers who spoke to The New Times, recommends the availability of affordable improved potato seeds and access to chemical fertilizers as a means to increase production and improve livelihoods. According to Theophile Ndacyayisenga, a Potato Scientist at the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), approximately 10 percent of Irish potato multipliers across the country provide improved or certified seeds to roughly 45,000 local farmers. Ndacyayisenga concurs that the shortage of sufficient seed multipliers for potato production is one of the many challenges facing the agriculture sector, notwithstanding the impact of climate change and insufficient investment. He anticipates that increasing the number of seed multipliers will effectively address the issues of poor Irish potato production and rising food prices in the market. Discussing the current challenges, he said, Potato farming demands significant direct investment, which has been a major obstacle to expanding the number of multipliers. He adds, Many potato multipliers lack the resources to specialize and choose to sell part of their yield on the market for immediate survival, rather than preserving all of it for seeds. However, RAB is training 'farmer promoters' to act as facilitators to address this problem. Previous data from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR), from the 'Seasonal Agriculture Survey Season B 2023,' revealed a production of 326,677 metric tons, marking a 1.3 percent decline compared to the previous season B in 2022.
