The latest Fraser Institute’s annual World Economic Freedom Report has ranked Rwanda among the most economically free economies in Africa. The report released Tuesday last week, is yet another vote of confidence that the country is on a clear growth path to meet its development objectives enshrined in the country’s development blue print, the second Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS2). Government has created a business friendly environment, which has seen an influx of foreign investors coming to set shop in Rwanda, leading to noticeable improvement in the economy. The local business community, especially the private sector should take advantage of the current conducive business environment to keep the momentum as the country strives to meet its short term and long term development goals. The private sector should lead on this front, by taking advantage of the country’s privileged position to be more competitive through adopting good business practices. However, despite the strides achieved so far, we still need to do more for our economy to keep on course, especially the small and medium enterprises which are seen as the key driver of economic growth. Poor customer care service is still a big challenge facing especially the local businesses. There is need for business owners to improve on such critical business aspects which might dent the progressive business environment, the country currently enjoys. Business owners should invest in training staff to adopt best customer service practices especially those in the hospitality industry. Government has rolled out several programmes to sensitise the business community on customer care but it is still work in progress. Rwanda’s ever improving doing business environment will get even better if we all join hands to consolidate the current achievements as we strive for more.
