The BBC aired a documentary on October 1, attempting to rewrite the facts about what happened in the build up to, during and the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The documentary perpetuated the false narrative that the RPF was responsible for the Genocide. Over the last twenty years, irrefutable evidence has continually emerged proving that Habyarimana’s government were the masterminds and implementors of the Genocide that claimed one million innocent lives. Courts from different parts of the world have heard and ruled on cases involving the masterminds of Genocidal regime. After long procedures they all come to (and still) the same conclusion that the Genocide was a well planned and executed machinery of Habyarimanas government. And, the remnants, who are still at large are involved in actions to continue with the plan to eliminate the Tutsi. One such group of remnants is the FDLR holed up in the DRC For a media organisation to give voice to the perpetrators is a blatant act of Genocide denial. The BBC documentary “Rwanda: The untold story” is not only insensitive to the Genocide survivors but also risk drawing back global efforts to ensure such atrocities never happen again. Rwanda has had to deal with similar attempts aimed at rewriting history, however, the hard lesson that has been learnt over and over again is that the truth will always prevail.
