Police officers train in use of hi-tech traffic gadget

Ten Police officers attached to the department of Traffic and Road Safety, on Sunday, started five-day training on use of ‘Advanced Speed Laiser,’ a newly acquired hi-tech gadget used to measure the speed of vehicles. This training of trainers’ will also benefit other police officers and is aimed at limiting the speed of vehicles and preventing accidents resulting from speeding. The Advanced Speed Laiser machine has the capacity to measure speed, video recording, and identify vehicles registration number unlike the previous one which could only indicate the speed. This machine will, therefore, facilitate in conflict resolution between the police and violators of traffic regulations. The trucam speed laiser machine also helps record information that can be used as evidence in courts of law. AIP Stanislas Nkurundungi, one of the participants, said the machine will help regulate vehicle speed and enforce road security, especially on highways. “The machines we were using previously measured speed only, hence putting an officer in a defensive and awkward position when a driver denied committing an offence, and it was really hard to prove it with no recording indicating the vehicle plate number,” AIP Nkurundungi said. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
