Darla Rudakubana is a communications expert currently working with the Ministry of Gender and Family promotion. She says what someone wears can also be a form of communication. The outgoing 28-year old who has a slight addiction to Pinterest and whose ‘weakness’ is Kigali’s nightlife revealed to Society Magazine’s Doreen Umutesi her classic and laidback fashion sense. 1. How would you describe your sense of style? Darla Rudakubana I believe one’s dress code is also a way of communicating with people around them.My fashion sense is laid back and classic. I’m a sucker for comfort but I also like clothes that reflect elegance and, every once in a while, glamour. I am a fan for old Hollywood styles, so I tend to get my fashion inspiration from there. 2. What’s your favourite clothing item? Fitting dark blue jeans are my favourite clothing items. 3. Where do you shop for clothes? Shopping for clothes in Kigali is very frustrating if you’re picky and not good at haggling with street vendors. I usually borrow (indefinitely) from my mother’s wardrobe because she has a great sense of style and her clothes are good quality. But I usually get my clothes from Rwanda Clothing or Mr. Price. 4. What do you consider when shopping clothes? When it comes to tailored clothes, the finishing is very important to me. Although I like simple clothes I always pay attention to detail. I also consider attires that fit, not only on my body but in my wardrobe too. 5. What is your favourite fashion accessory? Scarves and earrings – I can never resist buying them. 6. What is your favourite clothing item on a guy? For some reason I find plaid shirts and Timberland boots great for guys. 7. What’s your favourite scent? Darla Rudakubana Angel by Thiery Mugler is my favourite scent. My mum has worn it for as long as I can remember – it rubbed off on me. 8. What is the most expensive fashion accessory that you own in your wardrobe, and what led you into buying it? A black leather handbag by D&G (laughs) and I didn’t buy it, it was a present. 9. Any fashion advice? Invest in good quality clothes and accessories, they last longer and you are able to save your money in the long run. If you buy cheap stuff, it does not last long, thus you’re forced to keep on buying and you end up wasting your money.
