Democratic Republic of Congo-born footballer Agiti Tady Etekiama, also known as Dady Birori, has been handed a two-year ban by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for playing for Rwanda under a different name. (Timothy Kisambira) CAF said in a statement on Wednesday that the punishment was decided at an Africa Cup of Nations 2015 committee meeting in Addis Ababa. “In a decision of August 17, 2014, at which time Rwanda was disqualified from the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 by the Organising Committee of the Africa Cup of Nations, the player Etekiama Agiti Tady was suspended until further notice. “At it’s meeting on September 17, 2014 in Addis Ababa, the Committee decided to suspend the player Etekiama Agiti Tady for two years”. “The player, holder of a Congolese passport, and plays for the AS Vita Club of Kinshasa and was included in national selection of Rwanda under the name of Dady Birori with a different birth date,” reads the Caf statement. The striker, who plays for Kinshasa-based AS Vital Club, became Dady Birori when appearing for his adopted country Rwanda. Rwanda were disqualified last month from the 2015 Cup of Nations qualifiers following a complaint filed at CAF by the Republic of Congo, following their qualifier defeat to Rwanda. The ban will bar Etekiama from participating in AS Vital Club’s CAF Champions League semi-final against Tunisian club CS Sfaxien in Kinshasa this weekend.
