Rwanda Taekwondo Federation (RTF) has fixed October 3-4 as the official dates for the Ambassador’s Cup to be played at Amahoro national indoor stadium. The sporting federation confirmed the development this week through their secretary general, Placide Bagabo. The inaugural edition of the annual tournament was held last year and over 170 athletes from five regional countries namely Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, DR Congo and hosts Rwanda competed. Organisers, Rwanda dominated the meet, winning 11 out of 20 possible medals up for grabs. According to taekwondo federation’s officials, the target for the forthcoming second edition of the regional competition is to make it better, bigger and more successful. “We want this year’s edition to go beyond everyone’s expectations. The first edition was successful and the forthcoming one has to even be much better,” Bagabo told Times Sport on Tuesday in a telephone interview. He also disclosed that the martial art practitioners are doing everything possible to develop the sport and make Rwanda a taekwondo powerhouse. The two-day competition is set to attract over 250 athletes from seven countries namely Ethiopia, Burundi, DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and hosts Rwanda. The tournament includes four categories namely: Featherweight (-68kgs), Bantam (-63kgs), Fly (-58kgs) and Fin (-54kgs). It will also feature junior boys and girls categories.
