RESULTS Gisenyi (Rwa) 1-1 Kitende (Ug) Gisenyi boys’ soccer team and Uganda’s Kitende played out to a one-all draw in the opening match of the 7th edition of the East Africa Secondary School Championships on Sunday at Amahoro stadium. Gisenyi took the lead through their captain Clement Mutunzi who converted a penalty after 38 minutes and seemed on course of picking up their first win when Fred Sentogo leveled for the defending champions in the 84th minute. The match followed a colorful opening ceremony that was presided over by the Minister of Education Daphrose Gahakwa who urged the teams to use the games as a tool of enhancing solidarity and creating riendship. “This is the time to put aside our past differences and build unity,” she said. “This is the least we can offer for our youth as they strive to develop their skills without losing focus in education,” she continued. Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA) president Justus Mugisha also said. “There is need to build strong youth structures which can aid the growth of talent through regular and properly organized competitions.” The Games have attracted 87 teams from Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Southern Sudan. Sporting disciplines to be contested in include football, handball, netball, basketball, rugby, volley ball, and hockey. Although it’s the 3rd time Rwanda is participating in the championships, it is only the first time she is hosting the Games. Ends
