Editor, Refer to the story, “Kigali’s quest for sewerage system” (The New Times, August 22) This is a serious issue for Kigali City residents. Construction of a sewerage system should be among top priorities for City authorities and sewage water should be separated from safe drinking water pipes. I am undertaking a masters degree in infectious diseases in Australia; while I was taking a unit of environmental microbiology, I always wondered how waste water is treated in Kigali City. I didn’t have any idea about it. Even though the Kigali City communication officer says that those putting up houses should build mini-treatment plants, many people are used to dig pits which I do also consider a long term concern.
