APR, Police eye Cecafa Kagame Cup glory

RWANDA’S APR and Police football clubs start their bid for the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Cup glory this afternoon at Amahoro stadium. Three matches are on the cards today with defending champions Vital’O of Burundi taking on Somalia’s Benadir in the day’s first game at 1p.m. Debutants Police, under new coach Andre Cassa Mbungo, will then take on Sudan’s giants El Merreikh in a tricky encounter at 3p.m before APR wind up the day’s campaign against Burundi’s Atletico at 5p.m. “We are well prepared and the atmosphere is positive. Players are in good mood and we believe we will have a successful campaign. We know we are up against strong opponents but our aim is to win all three points regardless of anything,” added Cassa Mbungo. Meanwhile, Vincent Mashami, who will be assisting new Serbian coach Ljupko Petrovic, is also confident APR will stage a triumphant tournament. “We have had ample time to prepare for the tournament and believe that nothing will stop us from performing well. Our aim is to lift the title.” With group rivals KCCA of Uganda at the summit of the standings following their 2-1 victory over Gor Mahia of Kenya yesterday, APR will need to start strongly if they are to give themselves a decent chance to reach the knockout stage. A total of 34 matches will be shown live on SuperSport. The tournament is being staged at Amahoro and Nyamirambo arenas. President Paul Kagame is the patron of the annual regional club championships through providing US$60,000 in cash prizes.
