Why Isango Star’s Kabengera ditched the preppie look

Isango Star radio presenter Claude Kabengera has in recent times made a name for himself as a moderator and MC. The events he hosts range from beauty competitions to corporate events which means he has to dress appropriately. Below, he gives some insights into his own preference when it comes to fashion both on and off stage: What do you consider when choosing something to wear for an emceeing gig? Dressing for success can greatly add to your air of authority. I wear a suit and tie, or at a minimum, a jacket and tie. But the style changes according to the event. How would you describe your fashion sense when you are not on stage? I grew up preppie - you know, the polo shirt, oxford button-down, plaid shorts… but now I’m much more casual. Once in a while you will see me in shorts, a t-shirt, more often, ballet shoes for men. I wear minimal jewelry, no gold chains, or medallions, just a Swatch watch. And from time to time and only on special occasions, I like to wear a black suit or a t-shirt with a sports jacket over it, dark blue cotton slacks and a pair of white slip-on sneakers - The Miami Vice look. What style or clothing items do you think men should avoid forever? Wrap-around sunglasses, clothes that are too tight or baggy clothes, stained undershirts, deep v-neck t-shirts. Where would you recommend men to shop for clothes? I usually work with individual designers rather than shops. Would you wear second hand clothes? Not these days but I used to. How would you describe your hairstyle? My style is a combination of natural curls and a short haircut — the best of both worlds! It’s hip, stylish and seriously easy. What hairstyle do you think grown working men should avoid? Dreadlocks. According to you, do you think facials, manicure and pedicures are necessary for men? I don’t think these are necessary even with medical prescription obligations. Who do you borrow dress sense from? I only wear what I think is best for me but sometimes international celebrities like Trey Songs influence my style. What’s your favourite fashion accessory?
