The little lie that got me in trouble

I am well aware of the fact that I’m too old for my year of study. But it is not my fault. I am officially blaming my parents and friends who didn’t stop me when I said I wanted to work after my S6. I worked and gained absolutely nothing and after two years of suffering, I found my way back home. But I didn’t get the welcome I was hoping for. All I got were blank stares, probably questioning my decision to go and work instead of starting university immediately. Now, even the girlfriend I had in primary - yes, the one I used to whisper sweet nothings to - graduated. We met recently. You know the saying, “the first cut is the deepest”? When I bumped into her, I thought my heart would race Usain Bolt style; but it only jogged a little because she did look pretty. Naturally, I lied to her that I had graduated. I enjoyed the attention I got from her as she would drop by to see me at work, not knowing I was actually doing my internship, and thinking I was mature enough to start something serious with. When school started, I told her I had been transferred to a place upcountry and that we could only meet on weekends but talk on the phone anytime. That was my only way out of the little mess I was in. Later, I literally almost died when I went in for a paper and found her there as an invigilator. During examinations, they bring teaching assistants from different campuses and our teaching assistants also go to a different campus. But because I do not go down that easily, I ran out before she spotted me. I sat outside wondering what to do. The exam was a hard one and missing it meant doing it later, alone, with no one near me to copy from. I am almost certain I will not pass that paper.
