Editor, THIS IS in reference to the article, “Why you should resist that handshake” (The New Times, July 31, 2014). Healthcare in Rwanda is always considered a top priority and the Ministry of Health leaves no stone unturned as they explore avenues of preserving and enhancing health facilities as well as improving the standards of hygiene in the country. Handshaking is deeply rooted in Rwandan culture. Hand washing points in public areas may not really be a viable option. As Francis Tuyishime has rightly remarked, a massive sensitisation programme should be undertaken. We are aware of the deadly Ebola virus which is killing people across the continent. As Obedy Ntabara has rightly added, “It’s time people considered giving up the handshaking for health’s sake.” While Rwanda definitely gives India a glowing example in cleanliness with the Umuganda initiative, the graceful Indian “Namaste” could gradually be adopted as a good alternative to the handshake in this beautiful land of a thousand hills, which will ultimately leave many millions smiling.
