Musanze FC are surprisingly leading the 2023/24 Rwanda Premier League table, having managed three wins out the past three match days. Skipper Patrick Ntijyinama is one of players who have been key to the Northern Province-based side’s fortunes. The midfield maestro, who previously played for Gicumbi FC, Bugesera FC, Etoile de l’Est and Espoir FC, has been the engine of the team as he keeps things going smooth with his impressive performance midfield and quality leadership skills. Weekend Sport caught up with him as he took us through his life and football career. Excerpts Tell us about yourself I'm Patrick Ntijyinama. I was born on June 23, 1998 in Ngoma District, Eastern Province. How did your career begin? I started playing football at a tender age at Centre Amizero. ALSO READ: Musanze strengthens attack with Iradukunda Sulley signings If you had not been a footballer, what profession would you have taken up? Honestly, I would have been a doctor or a soldier. Who has been the greatest influence in your football career? It has been my family, they have been so helpful. Which local player is your all-time favourite? I like former Amavubi captain Haruna Niyonzima. He is simply my favorite. And which player do you look up to in the world? My idols are Tony Kroos of Real Madrid and Thiago Alcantara of Liverpool What is your target in your football career? I want to play in national team. I also aspire to play professional football outside of Rwanda. Musanze FC has been in fine form so far this season. What is your target? The target of the club is just to play every game as our final. How is it being the captain of a club with such ambitions? It is a great honor for me to captain such a great club and I will always do my best Have you ever played for the national team at any level? No, I haven't played in any of the national teams but I hope I will make it in the team soon. How do you see the standard of the Rwandan league? I think it is improving every year which is a very good thing. And more foreign players coming in will hopefully improve local players as well. What should Musanze FC fans expect from you? They should always count on me; I will continue to help our club in order to achieve our goals.
