Mukandanga registers personal best in Glasgow

Mukasakindi (Rwa) - 34:52.86 CLEMENTINE MUKANDANGA registered a personal best time on her debut in the Commonwealth Games as she finished 10th in the 10000m women final on Tuesday night at Hampden Park, in Glasgow. Mukandanga, 28, clocked 34:12.31, which is a drastic improvement from her previous best of 35:29.88. She finished one place ahead of compatriot Claudette Mukasakindi, who clocked 33:20.87. Once again, it was a Kenyan night as they dominated the women’s final to sweep the medals in a slow final. Joyce Chepkirui made a late dash to sneak past Florence Kiplagat and finished in a personal best time of 32:09.35. Emily Chebet won bronze. Faith Chepngetich Kibiegon also won gold for Kenya when she triumphed in the women’s 1,500 metres in a time of 4:08.94 ahead of England’s Laura Weightman and Canadian Kate Van Buskirk. The win brings Kenya’s medal tally to 12. Kenya has five gold, five silver and two bronze medals. In 800m, Rwandan pair of Timothy Robert Bagina and Emmanuel Ntakiyimana failed to qualify to the semi-final round. Bagina clocked 1:55.31 to finish sixth in heat one, while Ntakiyimana clocked 1:55.61to finish in the same spot in heat four. Cycling The country’s quest for medals now lie in cyclists; Janvier Hadi, Gasore Hategeka, Valens Ndayisenga, Adrien Niyonshuti, Jean Bosco Nsengimana, and Bonaventure Uwizeyimana. The trio of Hadi, Niyonshuti and Ndayisenga will compete in the men’s individual time trial today at 12pm. Tomorrow night, Eric Sebahire and Cyriaque Ndayikengurukiye will compete in the men’s 10000m final.
