Seminar calls for revival of culture

A two-day multi-disciplinary seminar on culture opened yesterday at Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) with a call on Rwandans to enhance and revive their rich culture. While opening the workshop, George Njoroge, the KIE Rector said that tomorrow’s circumstances depend on decisions people make today. He explained that there is a need to revive the Rwandan and African culture in general, and that this can only be done when Rwandans start believing in themselves. Njoroge added that the impact of civilization should play a crucial role in Rwanda if the country is to fully embrace its development ambitions. The seminar brought together various participants from different institutions, research centers, secondary schools, leaders in social affairs and authorities from different districts. Harriet Uwineza, a student in the faculty of Social Sciences and Administration at KIE, urged her fellow women to keep their traditional morals and adopt only the right behavioural changes in order to achieve the right goals. She underscored that before discussing gender equality, women should be careful about respecting traditional culture. However, Uwineza said that unlike in the past, women are not owned like property. “A woman should go for what she wants,” she advised, and urged women to support fellow women to develop their skills. The theme of the seminar is: “Rwanda in contact with Different Civilisations: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. Ends
