Documenting Liberation Struggle a noble cause

Editor, Refer to Dr Jean-Paul Kimonyo’s article, “RPF: The roots of change” (The New Times, July 18). It is important that Rwandan historians reflect on our history; this is truly well conducted research which will help the young generation to understand how and why the RPF started the struggle. The genocidal and apartheid-like regime of Habyarimana gave a clear message to the refugees: Your exile is permanent and you’ll never be allowed to return home, there is nothing further to discuss. Back home, there were a lot of injustices and discrimination in the education system too, and this was one of the myriad reasons some young people came from inside the country to join the RPF in the bush – even as we sometimes tend to forget about that aspect. I salute all those guys who had the courage to escape from Bugesera, Umutara, Butare, Gikongoro …and via Burundi or Kivu to join the frontline. And, above all, self-dignity that the Government of Rwanda gives the people, and her development is visible to everyone. What had been achieved in the 35 years of independence prior to our liberation? Only the reign of impunity, segregation and persecution! No more refugee status among Rwandans. Bravo RPF. Our history had been distorted by foreigners so much that a lot of confusion was created. The post-colonial leaders did not do justice to our history as they made many to believe that the history of Rwanda started after the “referendum”, yet we had better history that went beyond the then shortsighted politicians who did not have any vision for Rwanda.
