Espoir retained the local basketball league for a third consecutive time last week after beating 79-63 Gisenyi in Rubavu district with two matches in hand against CSK and Rusizi. Now the Nyamirambo-based club eyes Play-offs tourney which will comprise the best four placed teams in both men and women’s leagues. Espoir and APR (Women) are the play-offs defending champions. On the menu is the Fiba’Africa Zone five club championships scheduled for August 25-31 at the KPA Makande Hall in Mombasa, Kenya. Head coach Jean Bahufite (pictured) told Saturday Sport, “Our focus is mostly on Zone V championship. Winning the league title every year is nothing if we don’t conquer the region. It’s not early to be thinking and planning for it though we still have almost two months to go,” Espoir BBC won the regional tournament held in Kampala, Uganda in 2012 after beating Burundi’s Urunani but failed to defend the title in Burundi last year after losing to Urunani 65-56 Espoir in the final.
