Police in Gicumbi District are holding two men over alleged killing of a 56-year-old man, who happens to be the father of one of the suspects. The incident took place on Tuesday at around 9pm in Murehe Cell, Giti Sector, according to the police. One of the suspects (name withheld) is the son to the deceased while the other is a family relative. They are held at Rwamiko Police Station in Muko Sector. The deceased was identified as Damien Karagire. Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Northern Province Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying the deceased’s son is the prime suspect. Hitayezu said the murder might have been due to land-related conflicts. He explained that local mediators had one time intervened in a land wrangle involving the suspect and his father. The mediators ruled that the son should give back the property to his father but the former was not satisfied. “The suspect had occupied his father’s property and the latter took the former to local mediators who ordered the man to vacate the father’s property,” Hitayezu said. “He hatched the plot, waylaid the father and killed him with a machete,” he added. Police appealed to the public to avoid violence and always seek legal redress in case of any misunderstandings. Murder upon conviction attracts life sentence.
