Tour of Rwanda extended to Ngoma, Nyanza districts

The 2014 edition of the Tour du Rwanda will stretch to the districts of Ngoma and Nyanza for the first time. The tour is scheduled for November 16 to 23. Rwanda Cycling Federation (Ferwacy) chairman Aimable Bayingana confirmed the development yesterday. The 17th edition of the Tour of Rwanda since it became a UCI Africa Tour six years ago. The tour of Rwanda will cover seven stages including the new routes of Kigali Amahoro Stadium to Ngoma District (94 kilometers) and Rubavu to Nyanza district, the most grueling route which covers 173km. This is the second year running that Ferwacy has included new routes on the tour following the introduction of Kirehe District route which has since been replaced, meaning that the Tour of Rwanda total distance has risen to 911.6km from 805km. The Tour of Rwanda, which is organised by Rwanda Cycling Federation, was first held in 1988 before it became part of the UCI Africa Tour category 2.2 five years ago and since then no Rwandan has won it. Last year’s edition was won by South Africa after Dylan Girdlestone while Rwanda’s Valens Ndayisenga won the most promising rider accolade following his 11th place finish.
