Saving the environment with art

AS RWANDA joins the rest of the world to celebrate the World Environmental Day today, visual artist Innocent Buregeya has launched a campaign “Save Nature – Use the Books Project”. Buregeya’s Save the Nature campaign is taking place in Gakenke district. The campaign is about educating people about tree planting, painting and recycling environmentally harmful waste. Recycled materials are used in artistic designs that are sold as decorations. “I visited some schools in Gakenke district and realised that there was so much environmental degradation that I decided to make a difference by teaching young children how to sensitise people about conserving the environment through painting, which can also earn them a living,” said Buregeya. The project was launched at Groupe Scolaire Kambuga last Friday where the artist donated over 700 books to needy children and planted tress within the school premises. The self-taught artist has dedicated two days a week to travel to Gakenke to groom and teach children how to paint. Buregeya’s work is inspired by life, nature and his surroundings.
