Editor, This is in reaction to the article, “Govt spends over Rwf1 billion on post-abortion care annually – report” (The New Times, June 2) One billion francs is enough to build a health centre every year, and we are talking about those who go to hospitals. Do you have any idea about the number of people who don’t show up at hospitals yet they have post-abortion defects? They are many. This is a concern that the government should take more seriously and find adequate solutions. Susan, Rwanda ------------------------------------ The government should instead invest more in sensitization campaigns about vasectomy and sterilisation; that’s the only way we shall be able to deal with issues of abortion and high birth rates. That way, we would also be able to handle a lot of issues like child mortality rates. Figures indicate that one sexually active Rwandan gets on average seven condoms annually. Well, this is what we can afford but at least we need to increase contraceptives on the market. Condoms remain the easily accessed contraceptive but are scarce on the market. The Ministry of Health should increase its importation of condoms. Murenzi, Rwanda
