Gotchic is making its way back onto runways, but this time with a softer and fresher edge. Whether it is inspired by Victorian or Elizabethan eras — think black, think lace, and think seduction. Gothic fashion is often very dark in emotion — it is a mix of antique looks, lots of black, and often accompanied by heavy face make-up. This style of Goth wear that is worn is more of a political statement than a fashion statement. However, there are trends and themes we can pull from the darker collections and brighten them up. There are a few designers who come to mind rather quickly when thinking about gothic inspired clothing: Alexander McQueen and Zuhair Murad. And they do both have marvelous gothic pieces in their collections this year. But there are also some unexpected designers playing with the trend. Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabanna created a black shift dress with an antique crème lace collar. The collar follows traditional gothic style, while the loose shape of the dress keeps it modern. Marchesa designed a stunning mermaid black lace gown. The sweetheart neckline figure-hugging piece features dark roses with a lace appliqué. Beginning just above the knees, the black lace becomes transparent, allowing the wearer’s legs to show through. Erdem crafted a black lace jumpsuit. The piece features short lace sleeves, and tapered ankle length trousers. It looks marvelous when paired with high heels. American fashion house Alice + Olivia created a lace tiered dress. The deep V-back creates a modern, seductive appeal while the high front and volumes of fabric are closer to traditional gothic styles. From Hollywood’s “IT” girls to athletes, most women are wearing this trend. American actress Kate Hudson, who has been spotted many times on Glee in addition to her movie roles, wore a stunning Zuhair Murad dress. The intricate black floral detailing overlaid a camel-coloured chiffon skirt. She left her hair down, and wore thick, chunky rings. Actress, writer and political activist Jane Fonda wore an off the shoulder gothic Elie Saab gown to the Golden Globes. She paired with peep toe shoes and a diamond collar necklace. Singer Brandy wore a Jean Fares Couture gothic gown on the red carpet. She swept up her hair, and used her traditional thick black eyeliner on her lashes. Pulling off the gothic look is about moderation. Be sure to keep your make-up light, you don’t want to look like you are at a costume party. Also be sure to keep the jewelry classic and simple.
