Can breastfeeding help me against pregnancy?

Dear doctor; I am a 30-year-old woman with a six-month-old baby. I am reluctant to use injections or pills because I have heard people say they have side effects. I have however been told that breastfeeding can help prevent pregnancy. Is this true that once am breastfeeding I cannot conceive?
