SOUTHERN PROVINCE HUYE— Two people died immediately, while others sustained severe injuries when a pick-up truck they were traveling in rammed into a tree, at Rwabuye along the Butare-Kigali highway last Saturday. The four were returning from Huye where they were attending a mini trade exposition. The dead, both workers of Nyabisindu Dairy were identified as Betty Rwanyindo and Innocent Kabera, the driver, while the injured were identified as Joseph Hodari, Ramadan and one Shaban. The injured were rushed to the University Teaching Hospital in Butare. Meatallic material had to be used to dismember their bodies from the wreckage. According to the District Police Commander, Superintendent Bertin Mutezintare, the accident was caused by reckless driving. “The pick-up truck was over speeding and the driver seemed to be under the influence of alcohol,” he said. The latest incident brings the total number of people who have died in separate motor accidents to nine. This is over the last three months in Huye district, police said. According to Police records, the deaths that occurred between the months of May and early August were largely caused by car and motorcycle accidents. Fifteen people sustained serious injuries over the same period. Police say most of the accidents are caused by poor road usage by pedestrians, reckless driving and over speeding especially at night when traffic Police is off the roads and driving vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition.
