Food prices decline marginally in Kigali and provinces

Prices of a range of foodstuffs and other commodities have dropped in the City of Kigali and other parts of the country. A kilo of fresh fish costs Rwf2,500 compared to Rwf2,600 last week, while a tray of eggs costs Rwf2,500 in Kabeza, Kanombe and Karuruma markets. A kilo of Irish potatoes is at Rwf160 in Musanze, Gakenke and Base markets from Rwf180 last week. It is, however, unchanged at between Rwf250 and Rwf300 in most city markets and in the Southern and Eastern provinces. Fresh beans cost Rwf600 down from Rwf1,100 in most city markets. Tomatoes are down at Rwf500 per kilogramme in Nyarugenge and Kimironko markets from Rwf700 last week. Bananas (plantains) are at Rwf230 a kilo in Rugando, Giporoso and Kabeza markets compared to Rwf250 last week. They cost Rwf220 in Gakenke, Musanze and Base markets, from Rwf240. Léopold Nsabayezu, a food supplier in Gakenke market, attributed the reduction to improved food supplies over the past few weeks. Marie Jeanne Muhongerwa, a vegetables vendor in Kimironko market, said the current rains have boosted vegetable supplies. However, prices for some items have gone up. A sack of charcoal now costs Rwf6,500 in Gakenke and Kivuruga markets, up from Rwf6,000 two weeks ago. It is at between Rwf8,000 and Rwf7,000 in Kicukiro and Gahanga, Rugando, Remera, Kimironko and Gatsata markets. A kilo of peas costs Rwf1,300 from Rwf1,000, while that of passion fruits costs Rwf1,200, up from Rwf1,000. A kilo of tree tomatoes is at Rwf1,200 in Nyamirambo, Nyabugogo and Remera markets from Rwf700 last week. A big-sized pineapple costs Rwf700 in Kimironko and Gikondo markets, up from Rwf500 a few days ago, while carrots go for Rwf300 a kilo, from Rwf200. Onions are up at Rwf600 a kilogramme from Rwf500, while that of sweet potatoes is at Rwf250, up from Rwf200 in most markets in the city and its suburbs. A kilogramme of goat’s meat is at Rwf2,400 in Kimironko and Gikondo markets, while it costs Rfw1,800 in Gakenke and Musanze markets. Beef costs Rwf2,000 per kilo in Nyabugogo and Nyamirambo and Gakenke markets, unchanged from last week.
