Rwandan students in South Africa honour Genocide victims

The Rwandan students’ community of Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, at the weekend paid tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The Kwibuka 20 ceremony was officiated by the Rwandan High Commissioner to South Africa, Vincent Karega. The students were joined by friends and other well-wishers. A presentation on the history of Rwanda through pre-colonial, colonial, post colonial, genocide and post genocide era was made by Mr JL Buhigiro, a Rwandan PhD student, according to a statement. In his speech, Karega highlighted the root causes of the Genocide that targeted the Tutsi and its consequences on the country and the Great Lakes as a whole. He also elaborated the progress made in reconciliation, recovery and the transformation agenda. A question and answer session followed to allow South African and other African young students to understand the events in Rwanda 20 years ago. The next Kwibuka event in Southern Africa is scheduled in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Wednesday. “The Kwibuka events held is Southern Africa have been precious moments, particularly for Rwandans far from home to reconnect with their history and the country’s vision,” reads the statement.
