Rwanda drops two places in Fifa rankings

THE Rwanda national men’s football team, Amavubi has dropped two places from 129th to 131st, according to the latest rankings released on Thursday morning by the international football governing body Fifa. Amavubi is ranked 131st globally and 39th in Africa. Rwanda’s average Fifa ranking has rotated around 127th between 1995 and April this year with the highest-ever ranking being at 78th in 2008. It has been a long painful wait for Rwandan football-hungry supporters who want to see a rapid improvement in national football. Uganda has maintained top spot in the East African region ranking 86th in the world and 18th on the continent. Ethiopia remains ranked 101 worldwide and 27th in Africa just like Kenya who didn’t move to remain placed 106th worldwide and 29th on the continent. Sudan is 117th while Tanzania and Burundi are 122nd and 125th respectively. Ivory Coast is the highest ranked side in Africa at 21st ahead of the Egyptian Pharaohs who moved into second place and are 24th in the world. There has been some notable movement in the top ten, however, with Brazil climbing two places to fourth to lead the pack of four South American teams ahead of Colombia (5th, down 1), Uruguay (6th, down 1) and Argentina (7th, down 1). It is Brazil’s best position on the global ladder since July 2011. This tightly packed quartet now has the European leading trio of Spain (1st, unchanged), Germany (2nd, unchanged) and Portugal (3rd, unchanged). La Roja have now held the top spot since September 2011. Meanwhile Honduras (30th, up 2) is celebrating a return to the top 30 after an absence of 12 years. The biggest climb, however, has been achieved by Mauritania from north-west Africa (139th, up 13), thanks to two wins in Caf Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
