THE UNIVERSITY of Rwanda premises in Huye will play host to the maiden national senior fencing championship today. Despite being in its initial stages, fencing, a swords-fight sport, has gradually gained momentum after Rwandan Fencing Federation was launched in 2012. Federation president Jean de la Croix Hategekimana noted that the championship is perceived as the milestone meant to encourage new young sportsmen into. “Fencing is a new sport in Rwanda which is yet to be known by many people though it is thrilling. We are enthusiastic as we celebrate the impressive growth we have made since the game was initially introduced in late 2012. “This is a golden opportunity to demonstrate fencing appeal and beauty” Insisted Hategekimana “Owing to lack of equipment, we only played small tournaments last year but this year’s championship marks great development as we wish to make it bigger and accessible to everyone across the country,” he added. Four clubs namely Kigali, Nyamirambo, Gorillas and Remera fencing are expected to take part in the championship.
