Editor, Reference is made to Jane Karuku’s article, “African smallholder agriculture – our “game changer”” (The New Times, April 28). Dear Ms Karuku, you’re right on focusing on African “agricultural transformation”. However, hopefully not repeating mistakes made decades ago while promoting the Asian green revolution, and not striving to emulate the Western type agri-business, large volume producing a system but now proven to be not that healthy on the long run. Also, please do not forget to promote training of good and many African nutritionists. Food is indeed about quantity; but first and foremost about quality as well. With the “little” crops presently grown throughout the continent, maybe actual and future generations of Africans can feed themselves properly, provided quality of their staple foodstuff, and of preparation of these, is thoroughly assessed, revived and improved upon by nutritionists.
