REGISTRATION FOR the 10th edition of the MTN Kigali International Peace marathon has kicked off at all MTN Service Centres countrywide and Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) offices at Amahoro Stadium. MTN Rwanda is the official sponsor of the annual marathon scheduled for Sunday, May 18. Rwandans will pay Rwf2000, while foreigners will pay Rwf6000 as registration fees to participate in the one-day event which will have three categories of races – the full marathon – 42km, half marathon –21km and the ‘run for fun’ – 5km. Interested participants can also register through MTN Mobile Money. Under the theme ‘In the new world, we run together’, the Kigali International Peace marathon is a peace building and reconciliation platform. Proceeds from this year’s event will go to support the Rwanda Demobilization and Re-integration Commission activities. MTN Rwanda has injected US$77,000 [Rwf53m] into this year’s edition whose aim will be to unearth the next generation of half and full marathon runners. Elite athletes from Burundi, Kenya, Eritrea, Djibouti, Uganda and Tanzania among others will compete in the full marathon while the half marathon will be exclusively for Rwandans. The Athletics Federation is striving hard to have the marathon recognised and certified by the international athletics governing body-IAAF.
