Survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi from Ntarama Sector, Bugesera District , are to benefit from a Rwf 10m grant. According to Willy Rumenera, the Director of Comfort My People Ministry, a charity that works with disadvantaged families, the money is supposed to help 28 survivors start modern farming. “District authorities already gave us two hectares of land in the same sector and he we hope to start off early next month.” He added that the project will boost an irrigation system to mitigate effects of drought, and that they will also help the beneficiaries get market for their produce. “Most of the people are school drop outs, having been orphaned by the genocide, so we expect this development not to only improve their welfare but also make them self reliant.” Justin Rusanganwa, one of the beneficiaries, and a high school drop-out expressed delight over the move, saying that if successful, the proceeds from the project would enable him go back to school. He also hopes to support his sibling who is at university. “After losing both parents and 6 siblings in the Genocide, this gesture shows me that there are people who still care, and it makes me hopeful about life,” noted Ernest Rudasingwa, another beneficiary. Meanwhile, the same charity will soon start a water project in Burera District, Northern Province in June. Over 30,000 people are expected to benefit from boreholes they will dig.
