THE regional football governing body, Cecafa, has announced a new club competition that will have winners of cup competitions in the region compete against each other for the title. The inaugural tournament is expected to be played between May 20 and June 5 this year in Sudan. Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said the new competition is timely as the region needs as many competitions as possible to strengthen the Cecafa clubs and give them a competitive edge at the continental stage. Cecafa and host federation Sudan will cater for all travel and accommodation costs of participating teams. For Rwanda, AS Kigali being Peace Cup holders will take part in the tournament but this will depend on their current engagements in this year’s competition, which has reached the quarter-finals stage. On Wednesday, Andre Casa Mbungo’s outfit defeated Second Division side Rwamagana 3-1 to set up a clash against reigning league champions Rayon Sports in the 1/8th round. The winner between the two teams will face APR in the quarter-finals. The first Nile Basin Cup Winners’ Cup tournament will have teams from the Cecafa region plus the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Egypt has been offered the chance to nominate clubs to take part.
