Are restrictive laws doing more harm than good? (Laws ensure society runs well)

Before a bill is enacted into law, parliamentarians sit for days, months or even sometimes years discussing what law should be put in place and the suitable punishment once it’s violated. The fact that these brains (whom you vote for) come together and design the laws that can help run society better, actually makes it a good thing. Laws are put in place to maintain peace, order and stability in society. Without laws, there is anarchy and chaos, and no sense of order. To ensure that society operates in an orderly manner, that’s essentially what the government administration is there for; to protect its people. Sometime back, a celebrity in Uganda was stopped by the police and they discovered that he had been smoking marijuana. Well, Uganda has no laws concerning marijuana, so they couldn’t place any charges against him. Now imagine having more loopholes in our legislations. Lawyers would be running cases like vendors purchasing items in a cheap market. To have efficient laws in place, you need citizens who will actually respect them. For example, in Rwanda, the government passes a law and it will be respected because we trust those who put them in place. Despite its terrible past, the country has made a remarkable recovery and it’s considered as a model for developing countries. Rwanda is labeled as Africa’s biggest success story, having achieved stability, economic growth, gender equality and women’s empowerment, promoting education, ICT and cleanness in such a short time. The government is also widely seen as one of the most efficient and honest in Africa. Finally, without restrictive laws, there would be no reason for some people to be decent or good citizens. There would be people out there who would abort without a second thought and do it for any reason. With laws in place, people take time to think twice about their actions and in order to come up with a real and less risky solution.
