President Paul Kagame yesterday arrived in Brussels, Belgium for the 4th EU-Africa Summit, which gets underway today. Held under the theme, “Investing in People, Prosperity and Peace”, the two-day summit brings together leaders from across Africa and the European Union to discuss several issues, ranging from peace and security to economy and climate change. The summit will also hold a special meeting on the Central African Republic, which will be hosted by President of the European Council, Van Rompuy; President Francois Hollande of France; and President Abdel Aziz of Mauritania. Rwanda maintains 800 troops serving under an African peacekeeping mission in CAR. During his visit to Rwanda in March this year, the EU Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, announced a new six-year development partnership between Rwanda and the 27-nation Community, which is headquartered in Brussels. “For the period of 2014-2020 our goal is to strengthen economic growth in the country by focusing on the energy sector reform and agriculture because they create job and economic growth,” he said at the time. Previous EU-Africa summits took place in Cairo, Egypt in 2000, in Lisbon, Portugal in 2007, and in Tripoli, Libya in 2010.
