LIONS DE FER Rugby club needed extra time to beat champions Buffaloes in the first leg of the sevens circuit dubbed ‘Muhanga sevens’ on Sunday in Muhanga. With the game tied at 14-all after normal time, the game went into extra time as Lions de Fer pressed defending champions’ dominating territory and possession, which saw Lions de Fer Rugby club beat Buffaloes with a score of 19-14. Buffaloes blamed poor officiating as the cause of their defeat though lack of discipline also played part as they played most of the game with a man down. “We were denied two clear tries by the officials,” Buffaloes club captain Kamali noted after the game. Patrick Shyaka from ETM was recognised as the tournament’s MVP as the young Muhanga based team finished third with Sharks Rugby club in fourth position. Clubs will turn their eyes on the second leg of the Skol tournament, which will be held in Kigali in a fortnight.
