Dear Doctor; I am Melvin 30 years of age, I want to know whether fistula can attack men or it is just a condition for women? Dear Melven; Fistula is a connection between two vessels or two organs having epithelial lining. There is a big range of possible fistulas and both men as well as women can be affected, from all age groups. Some are congenital like pulmonary or cerebral arteriovenous fistula, some are secondary to disease process like vesicovaginal fistula in women due to prolapse uterus, colorectal fistula in men. Some fistula occur due to therapeutic interventions like trachea esophageal fistula (connection between wind pipe and food pipe) after tracheostomy, biliary fistula where bile duct is connected to skin surface following gall bladder surgery. The list is long and causes and treatment of fistula vary as per the cause and physical manifestations.
