KENYA women’s football team arrived in Kigali yesterday ahead of the 2014 African Women’s Championships qualifying match against Rwanda scheduled for Sunday at Stade de Kigali. The Kenyan delegation, which arrived aboard Kenya Airways, is being accommodated at Alpha Palace hotel and will hold their training session today at Ferwafa grounds. The race to the 2014 finals, which will be staged in Namibia, will see Rwanda take on Kenya for the very first time in the history of women’s football as both teams try to qualify for the ninth edition of the continental competition. Head coach Justine Okiring is confident his side will get a good result in the first leg this weekend before hosting the return leg two weeks later in Nairobi, Kenya. The winner will proceed to the next round to face the winner in the Nigeria/Sierra Leone fixture. “We have camped for only two days at the Safaricom Stadium and I believe we will give our best,” Okiring told the Kenyan media on Tuesday. He added: “I hope for positive results before the return leg. Most of my players are experienced as they play in the national league. We have to work with whatever we have for now and maybe later plan how to prepare well for the return match in two weeks.” Okiring has recalled some key players who took part in the under-20 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in 2012. They include captain of the team Neddy Atieno, Mural Auma and Wendy Achieng’. Meanwhile, Rwanda’s She Amavubi have been in camp for the last two weeks and head coach Marie Grace Nyinawumuntu is confident her team will register a health first leg win in-front of their home fans.
