Editor, I WISH to respond to Allan Brian’s article, “Burundi in the news and not for a sex scandal”, (Sunday Times, February 9). I would like to suggest that everyone takes a tour to Burundi, and I bet that he will come with different perceptions regarding the country. It’s true that we Burundians still have a long way to go, and, most importantly, we have a lot to learn from neighbouring countries within the East African Community (EAC), but the issue at hand here is that the whole of EAC has myriad steps to take as well. We are always inclined to learn from the West despite getting clearly acquainted that it would take us centuries (if ever) to reach the destination. This is the reason I think it is wise for Burundi to learn from countries like Vietnam and Cambodia due to our shared similarities (wars), and I am sure that theyre better positioned to give us lessons.
