Though the modern man borrows a lot from his father and elders, he stands out by the way he embraces past trends and styles. He stands out by the way he modifies what he borrows from his father. The sweater vest is one item that the modern man borrows from his father but wears it trendily to fit into style today. The sleeveless sweater which previously went by the name ‘tank top’ was preferred by the modern man’s father and by the look of things; the modern man likes it too. Past generation fathers wore it, not for style, but to keep warm under the suit. They wore it under coats when temperatures were low and the coats didn’t shield them from the cold well enough. But the modern man wears it for reasons beyond beating the cold; he wears it for style. He wears it to look trendy and avoid the blazer his father loved. Sweater vests can be worn officially or casually but most prefer them official, at times under a blazer and other times without a cover over them. Some come with buttons but there is never a right time to walk around with buttons open. When worn casually, they come off better over khaki or cotton pants than they do with denim. Formally, tie or no tie, one can still rock a sweater vest. The hard part is matching sweater vests with the rest of the outfit because it is easy to colour clash. When pairing it with official outfits, it is best to go for plain coloured vests and not multi-coloured. Multi-coloured vests should be only informal or on dress-down Fridays. Previously it was okay for sweater vests to be slightly baggy, but for the modern man, it is a fashion flop. They are meant to fit perfectly but not figure hug. It would be an ideal trademark for one who wants to come off as decent but doesn’t want to subscribe to the old fashion trends.
